The weekend is going to be full of fun for the audiences as two comedy movies, though of starkly different genres, release this Friday – Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan’s ‘Piku’ and Sunny Leone and Ram Kapoor’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’.
‘Piku’, directed by Shoojit Sircar, is a romantic comedy with Deepika playing the titular role of Piku and Big B playing her cranky, old father – Bhaskor Banerjee. Irrfan plays Rana Chaudhary, the man who has to ferry the father-duo daughter duo from New Delhi to Kolkata. The movie, also touted to be the first wholesome family entertainer of the year, traces the journey of Rana falling in love with the dysfunctional duo and its family.
Shoojit Sircar’s previous movies – ‘Vicky Donor’ and ‘Madras Cafe’ – do ensure a quality entertainer after a long time. The initial reviews have started pouring in and the industry seems to be falling in love with Piku and her father.
‘Piku’ has been promoted well and certainly, rides on the star power of Big B and Deepika. Irrfan adds to the quality of the movie and his chemistry with Deepika has had everyone talking. The unlikely pair – Deepika and Irrfan – might just be the surprise package of the movie.
The movie is expected to have a descent opening and do even better as weeks pass.
The second release of the weekend is the sex comedy – ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ – starring Sunny Leone and Ram Kapoor. The movie sees Ram playing a middle-aged businessman, who is enamoured with a Bollywood diva, played by Sunny. What happens when the diva enters his life is what forms the crux of the movie.
The movie comes close on the heels of Sunny Leone’s last release ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ and this can prove to be a detterent for the audiences to watch ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’.
However, the same factor can become a motivation too and the movie can gather a good opening. Laden with sexual innenduos, the sex comedy has its own section of audience and thereby, is expected to have a descent opening. But with a biggie like ‘Piku’ and last week’s ‘Gabbar is Back’, what remains to be seen is whether it can sustain the opening and convert it into large numbers just like ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ did.
Both the movies will, however, have to grapple with Akshay Kumar ‘Gabbar is Back’, which is still going strong at the Box Office.
With two distinct movies, the audiences are surely in for a treat. Get ready with your popcorn bowls, we say.
