Crouched low on the ground with their fingers firm on the shutter, they waited for her with a sense of urgency that’s hard to imagine. The lights go out for a few seconds and, all of a sudden, the stage is brilliantly lit in red. The gate on the stage splits open into two and through pitch-black darkness and smoke, her faint silhouette appeared like a ghost in the fog. Wearing a figure-hugging red dress with a plunging neckline, Sunny Leone walked down the ramp blowing air kisses to the audience amid blinding flashlights.

Former adult-film-star turned Bollywood actress Sunny Leone was in New Delhi on Thursday (June 5) to promote MTV Spiltsvilla Season 7 , which  she is co-hosting with VJ Nikhil Chinappa. She spoke to the Indian Express (sometimes in broken Hindi) about her journey in Bollywood, reality shows, and that she’s isn’t going to shed the ‘sexy’ tag anytime soon.

Excerpts from the exclusive interview:

Ques: How has your journey been in Bollywood?

Sunny Leone: Everything is new for me here. So many things keep happening every moment in my life and next thing I know I am signing another movie. Its been a learning experience for me in this industry and I am happy to have the opportunity to do the show. Since the time I have entered the entertainment it’s always have been work. But before this event, I came to New Delhi with my family and that’s something I wish I could do right now. I like those ladies who sit by the sidewalk and put mehendi. They ask me, “aapke haath mein mehendi laaga dein?” I always want to do these little things, but time nai milta and shooting bhi hai so…

Ques: You had earlier mentioned that you want to shed the ‘sexy’ tag, but then you signed up for a sex comedy movie like ‘Mastizaade’. Haven’t you contradicted your stand?

Sunny Leone: I don’t know who said this but whatever was written was complete nonsense. If that was the case I wouldn’t be making the movie. I think every movie is going to have some sort of sexiness to it. That’s just part of watching movies. We love it when Shah Rukh Khan or Hrithik Roshan take their shirt off, and their bodies are all oiled up. In fact, when Deepika Padukone and other A-list actresses wear beautiful clothes, they look sexy and beautiful. We as human beings like watching it because we are naturally attracted attracted to beauty. So, sexiness and boldness and being different on screen is a part of entertainment.

Ques: How are reality shows different from movies? What side to you will we get to see in Splitsvilla?

Sunny Leone: You will see the goofy, nerdy side of me. In movies (now she starts speaking in broken Hindi) aapka character hota hai, and you have to act the way your director wants you to. It’s not real its fictional. In reality shows, aapka real personality bahar aata hai and that emerges for everybody to see. This is completely different from shooting a movie. In a movie, you set up a shot, practice, rehearse a line over and over again .You then deliver your lines with the emotion that’s required in that situation, and you check the shot, do it again. So, its a controlled environment. In reality shows, its a uncontrolled environment. You have to respond to people’s reactions as they speak.
