Canadian porn star-turned-actress Sunny Leone has clarified that her forthcoming flick “Mastizaade” is “not a sex comedy, it’s an adult comedy”.
“I want to tell this to everyone that Mastizaade is not a sex comedy, it’s an adult comedy for adults. As far as the censor board is concerned… the board is doing their job and it’s our job to push boundaries and create something different,” the actress told IANS.

Actor Rajniesh Duggall is all praise for his co-star Sunny Leone, with whom he has shared screen space twice, and says the actress is very grounded despite being extremely popular.
Rajniesh first worked with the “Jism 2” star in last year’s “Ek Paheeli Leela”. The duo will team up again for their forthcoming romantic-drama “Beiimaan Love”.
“Sunny Leone is very professional. It has been a great experience working with her. She is very well known, extremely famous, and yet very grounded. When on set, she is completely in the working-mode zone. We have worked previously so there was a good comfort zone between us,” Rajinesh told PTI.
The actor says “Beiimaan Love” is very dark and romantic unlike the duo’s last outing.
“It was a challenging role to play. It is a bold character and the film is about love, lust, revenge and drama. It is a dark romantic film. It won’t be like ‘Leela’, which was spanning in different times. It is a very today’s film.”
Rajniesh, who made his debut with Vikram Bhatt’s horror film “1920”, will next be seen in “Direct Ishq”. He plays the role of Vickky, a flamboyant man, in the Rajiv S Ruia directed film.
“I was initially offered the role of Kabir Bajpai, before Arjun Bijlani came on board to play the character. It was a soft, lover boy role which I didn’t want to do anymore. I said I will play the role of Vickky Shukla, who is an out-an-out masala ‘dabangi’ character, very flamboyant and charming,” he said.
The actor, who was also seen in bold romantic number “Mohabbat Barsa Dena Tu” from Bipasha Basu-starrer “Creature 3D”, says he wants to shed his image of a soft lover boy.
“It is a conscious decision to break free of the lover boy tag. I was endorsing a suitings brand for a long time and then I left it because I wanted to come out of the clean, complete man image. Hence I did ‘Ek Paheeli Leela’, the song ‘Mohabbat Barsa Dena’ and now ‘Direct Ishq’,” he said.

Actress Sunny Leone, who will soon be seen in sex comedy film “Mastizaade”, says the film director made her feel so comfortable that she never felt “wrong” shooting for the movie.
“Every actor and actress have their own dos and don’ts and in this film (‘Mastizaade’), there were lots of don’t but me and Milap Zaveri (the director of the film) sat together and decided what we can do. He made me so comfortable.
“I feel whatever we shot for ‘Mastizaade’ is not wrong and I am not worried about people’s reaction towards me,” she added.
Co-produced by Pritish Nandy and Rangita Pritish Nandy, “Mastizaade” will release on January 29. The film also features Tusshar Kapoor and Vir Das, among others.
Sunny feels that people have different perceptions about her but she never took it seriously.
“If people think I can do anything onscreen then that’s a natural thing for them to think. I can’t do anything about that. As an actor when you start putting limitations, you don’t have an open mind to explore.”

Sunny Leone’s ‘Mastizaade’ is all set to entertain audience with its sexual innuendos and double entendres. While there are many takers for adult comedy in the country, there is also a section of audience that finds such comedies cheap and vulgar. In a candid conversation with IndianExpress.com , director Milap Zaveri explains why Mastizaade and its jokes are not exactly vulgar in nature and has its audience.
Ques: What is Mastizaade all about?
Milap: Lots of fun, lots of madness, naughtiness, sikkas (coin) which are hilaoing (shaking), Sunny Leone in a double role. The whole motive is entertainment.
Image may be NSFW. Clik here to view.
Ques: Happy that finally all issues with the censor board have been resolved?
Milap: Very happy. We worked in tandem with them for four months and made sure that the product that has finally come out is what I set out to make. Whoever has seen Grand Masti will not be disappointed with Mastizaade. Infact, they will get that and more.
Ques: While adult comedies do have an audience in our country, there are also many who find it vulgar and cheap? What’s your take on the same?
Milap: Let me tell you a story about Grand Masti. I went to Gaiety Galaxy. There were eight to nine women wearing burkhas laughing and clapping. In another show, a girl next to me was with two of her guy friends. During interval, her guy friends turned around and told her, let’s leave, it is too vulgar. The girl said if you want you go, I want to see it. In night, I went to PVR phoenix. There was a 70 -year-old man and his family and they were laughing and enjoying. So if there was one section who didn’t like it, the film wouldn’t have done a business of Rs 100 crore. For the Khans, Rs 100 crore is a joke. For a Grand Masti to do Rs 100 crore means 90 per cent of the audience who we targeted went and saw the film.
Image may be NSFW. Clik here to view.
Ques: Who is your target audience?
Milap: Our target audience are youngsters both boys and girls. A boyfriend may not go with his girlfriend but he may go with his friends. The girl will go with her friends. For me, youngsters above 18 are a strong audience.
Ques: So, would you say that those who call such films vulgar are hypocrites?
Milap: Each person’s prerogative is different. The thing which I find vulgar, others may not and vice-versa. I have a family which includes my younger brothers, sister, wife, mother and father. They are my sounding board. If I can narrate any joke to my mother and she doesn’t find it offensive then I can use it in the film. If my wife says this is too much, I don’t put it in the film. For me, they are my barometer. There are people who watch and like American Pie and when it comes in Hindi they don’t like it. Unfortunately, we have a culture of looking down at our own national language. This is the land of Dada Kondke. He made blockbusters doing this. People went to theatres to watch it and they loved it. It is only not fashionable to not watch these films or fashionable to say that I don’t watch it. All of them want to go and watch. Jab sikka hilta hai, everyone watches it.
Ques: Riteish Deshmukh is upset at his name being used for promotions of Mastizaade. What went wrong?
Milap: I don’t want to comment.
Ques: But why? Have you spoken to him yet?
Milap: I don’t want to comment. Please respect that.
Ques: Alright. Tell us, how was it working with Sunny Leone?
Milap: Sunny Leone is crazy. She is child-like in real life. She has a double role in the film, one where she is sexy and other one where she is funny. She worked very hard in the film. Going back and forth in both roles was tough for her.
Ques: When will we see an A-list actress acting in adult comedies?
Milap: Sunny Leone is an A-lister. An actress who can give me an opening of Rs 9 crore on Day One is A-list enough for me.

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan on Wednesday spoke out in support of actress Sunny Leone, who was at the receiving end of harsh questions about her professional choices in a TV interview.
During the promotional TV interview with CNN IBN anchor Bhupendra Chaubey, Sunny was asked that while she would like to work with Aamir Khan, but would Aamir Khan like to work with her.
Sunny faced it sportingly, and it is this spirit that has impressed Aamir.
Sunny acknowledged Aamir’s support with a re-tweet, which read: “I think my heart just dropped seeing this! Thank you so much for the support. It means the world and beyond to me.”

Sunny, who made inroads into Bollywood with “Jism 2”, is awaiting the release of her new film “Mastizaade”. It is to promote this sex comedy that she went in for the interview with Chaubey.
The interview was tagged as “disgusting and sexist” by a string of celebrities, who expressed support to Sunny.
Some of the questions asked were: There are lots of married women who look at Sunny Leone as a threat to their husbands, do you not care about all this?
A member of parliament, in his speeches, has held you responsible for corrupting Indian morality. How do you deal with that?
She was even asked: If Sunny Leone is becoming brand ambassador of New India, is that a dangerous trend to have?
The anchor didn’t stop there. He also asked Sunny if she is the reason behind the growing porn watchers in India.
“Since you have come to Indian cinema, the number of people watching porn has increased proportionately to the extent that we are now the world’s largest consumer of porn. Can you respond to that,” he asked.
However, Sunny answered the queries with wit and poise, thereby garnering applause from known names of the film fraternity.

There is nothing fake or dishonest about Sunny Leone. There is nothing that she regrets about her past adult film association.
When we met Sunny Leone for an interview in the recent past, the actress was forthcoming in her opinions about herself. When we asked her if she would like to be reborn as Sunny Leone, the Mastizaade star without batting an eyelid told IndianExpress.com, “Yes, I would love to be reborn as Sunny Leone. I love my life.”
For all the bold image she portrays on screen, Sunny Leone reveals that she is a shy person in reality. When asked if she is highly misunderstood most times by people, Sunny Leone said, “That definitely is the case. If anybody took five minutes to actually get to know me, they would realise that I wasn’t what they thought I was initially.”
While Sunny’s life looks interesting to the outside world, the actress doesn’t feel there is anything exciting about herself. She however is open to the idea of a biopic being made on her. “It’s definitely something that I would be open to. I don’t find my life that interesting. But may be people might. I know that there certain things in my life that might seem interesting to people.”

Image may be NSFW. Clik here to view. Chaubey’s problem was not just with Sunny and her choices but also with her guilt-free and unabashed celebration of sexuality.
The widespread ridicule and condemnation that the Sunny Leone- Bhupendra Chaubey interview met with, was perhaps the only good thing to come out of it. The interaction was seen as judgmental and misogynistic, even hostile, with the host repeatedly shaming the actor to try and elicit a reaction he wanted, that of guilt and shame. Sunny refused to be bullied, stood up for her life choices, and came out like a trooper that she is.
While the interaction was a train wreck even before it started, with a smug Chaubey standing before the studio, alluding to Sunny’s past and her being most ‘googled’- something that he went on to repeat several times, the main conflict arose because Chaubey had already decided on the narrative that he was trying to construct even before talking to the actor. The interview can be largely seen within three themes of judgement: First, trying to elicit guilt and attempts to get an apology; second, the idea of seeing sexuality both as a threat and a thing of shame; and third, the idea of moral corruption, of purity and pollution. I explore these in turn.
The interview was a classic case of a man silencing the woman by the act of hijacking her story and trying to substitute his own. His own voice was informed by the conventions of narrow moralities; he had decided to judge her from what he assumed was the locus standi of the middle class (it’s another matter that the same class was united in support for Sunny). He wanted her to subscribe to his idea of a woman (he alludes to an average house wife at one point), where any deviation from the normal (like the actor’s choice to act in porn movies) was expected to be accompanied by guilt and apology.
As Sunny refused to apologise for her choices and stood her ground, Chaubey became desperate. His questions became pointed and he asked her not once but twice if she regretted anything in life. She spoke about not being home fast enough when her mother passed away. She also said that she has no professional regrets, only few mistakes like everyone else (he asked ‘what kind of mistakes’). She spoke of the cultural shock she experienced initially in Bollywood – alluding to method in its madness. This could have been an interesting line to explore but Chaubey was not interested, he ignored that and asked of other regrets, to the extent of giving her the choice to turn back time and do over.
Sunny answered that since her past actions have made her what she is today (a person that she is happy with and proud of) she would not take that option.
Chaubey, despairing for the answer he wanted; the narrative that he was looking for, tried scare tactics, he used the word ‘haunt’ and ‘holding back’ for her past- she pointed out these were media terms and not hers. He alluded to her past as a ‘porn star’ (using air quotes) and said that given her history no ‘good’ actor like Aamir Khan would want to work with her. He questioned whether her ‘body’ will take her everywhere, she pointed out that applied for most people in the entertainment industry.
Chaubey’s problem was not just with Sunny and her choices but also with her guilt-free and unabashed celebration of sexuality. Since he viewed sex as taboo (unless perhaps within conjugality) and a threat (he tries to paint her as the temptress, trying to disrupt the domesticity by ‘stealing’ husbands), he just could not fathom her actions as her choice. Clutching at straws, he even asked her to narrate how she became a porn actor, trying to fit her into narratives of being an unwitting ‘victim’ of loss of ‘innocence’. Here Sunny was perhaps best in her interview; she said that she didn’t have any ‘horror stories’, she wasn’t abused or beaten or molested. She went to the extent of inverting the narrative and said that when she saw the pictures of the women she found them to be free, sexy and beautiful, women who are doing what they want to do.
Anxious and taken aback, Chaubey was at his most ridiculous when he said that she is facing criticism from ‘even politicians’! Indian politicians are not exactly paragons of ‘high standards of decency’ which the host was expecting from the actor and certainly they are no guardians of morality. In a country where victim blaming, boys will be boys narrative, and ‘slut’ shaming is the norm and political discourse ranges from blaming noodles to jeans (anything but patriarchy and rape culture) for crimes against women, surely politicians will judge any woman not confining to their narrow norms. Then he answers his own questions, saying that they hold her responsible to the moral corruption in the society and gives us a peek into his own psyche and discomfort; he wonders if he is being ‘morally corrupted’ speaking with her. He tried to substantiate by giving her some data on Indian porn consumption, and attributed its rise as being Sunny’s sole doing.
Wow you just made my whole year saying that! I was just happy you wrote me back :) respect you dearly! :) :) :) http://t.co/j4lxuVuar8
Our society’s discomfort with sexuality and especially with women’s sexuality has meant that it has always tried to view sexual pleasure with guilt and shame. Instead of trying to locate this discomfort within one’s own narrow definitions of morality and hypocritical acceptable standards of an Indian woman, the society looks outside, and tries to point blame on some externality. This they can do when they hold someone else responsible for ‘corruption’. Sunny Leone in this interview seemed like a fair game to Chaubey. He said at one point that if she was becoming ‘brand ambassador of New India’, then it was a ‘very dangerous trend to have’.
So entrenched he was within his ideas of purity (his idea of housewife) and pollution (the actor who he held responsible for polluting him and his country) that he just couldn’t reconcile to the idea that she could have a happy married life (she alluded to her smart, kind, sexy husband at one point) and be an uninhibited, successful movie star at the same time. He took it upon himself to speak of the wives whose domesticity he believed was threatened by the sexuality of the ‘other woman’. There was remarkably no judgement of the husband, a consumer of her movies and perhaps in Chaubey’s view someone at the centre of the tension between comfortable domesticity of a housewife and temptations of a seductress. He tried to project Sunny as Eve before and after her fall, and loss of presumed ‘innocence’, asking her about her ‘old life’ and whether she was still called Karanjit.
He has now come up with a half-hearted and poor defence of his tasteless interview in his blog, completely missing the criticism and again referring to her as ‘Karanjit, as she used to be called earlier’: a past he is obsessed with and the one he feels existed before the ‘fall’. A ‘past’ which he pompously claims was the only reason she ‘qualified to be on my show’ and the past which is informed by the narrative he wants to impose on the actor. He reiterates that people are not going to watch her because of her status as a star and chooses to define her by her past and past alone (remarkably something which Sunny has never shied away from and, in fact, celebrated her choice). However, the worst is his odious attempt at another hijack of her amazing courage and conviction: he takes the credit for making her look good, like a test she passed he gives her grace marks, ‘So Sunny you did well’. But most importantly by writing this blog he ensures that this interview almost functioned as a microcosm of the society, where the woman’s narrative was prologued and epilogued by the narrow, hegemonic judgement of the patriarchal values.

As a storm of support gains a momentum of epic proportions post her much talked and tweeted about interview on television recently, Sunny Leone eases back and sounds the way she always does, calm and composed.
“Journalists ask all kinds of questions, and those who know me, know that I am a calm person and would enver let somebody get the best of me,” she connects for a quick chat from Mumbai.
Still ‘digesting’ the turn of events, Leone confesses she was pretty surprised with the support from the industry. “I thought it would go in the opposite direction, because sitting there, giving that interview on news channel, I have honestly never felt so alone and upset, with no one to protect me or help me. Women are intuitive creatures, and I had the feeling of where the interview was heading, and that he wanted to elicit a response that would make me sad, angry or feel bad about the choices I’ve made. I wasn’t going to back down or let him make me a vicitm,” says the actress, who, at that moment was worried whether she’d given the right answers or was informative enough.
In any case, forget the steamy porn star tag or her journey from Karenjit Kaur Vohra/Karanjit Malhotra to Sunny Leone or that her existence can amount to ‘moral corruption’ of society, right now, she is devoted to her upcoming film, Milap Zaveri’s Mastizaade.
From India’s first ‘porn-com’ Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 to Great Grand Masti and Mastizaade, it’s a year of adult comedies. ‘Crazy, naughty and a raunchy comedy of errors’ is what Mastizaade is projecting itself as. Penned by Zaveri and Mushtaq Sheikh, this one stars Vir Das, Tusshar Kapoor and Leone in a twin role. “I play twin sisters Lily Lele and Laila Lele. While Laila is an over-the-top me, glamourous, open minded, confident girl, Lily is the dorky nerdy twin who wears spectacles, has a bad haircut and stutters.” It’s a film she wanted to do purely because she wanted to explore comedy after Ragini MMS.
The fact that it’s an adult comedy replete with double entendres doesn’t perturb Leone. “I don’t understand why comedies are not looked at as performance oriented roles. For instance Jennifer Aniston looked wow in one of my favourite movies, Meet the Millers. She is sexy, smart and funny, and that’s what counts.”
Here’s a performing artist and astute businesswoman who maintains a zen-like persona, is at ease with her identity and feels no heat from other leading ladies.
According to Zaveri, who commented in an Indian Express interview ‘she is an A-lister who can give him a opening of Rs 9 crore on day one.’ According to Leone, there are no categories or boxes to tick mark, everything has to have one element – entertainment. “I did Mastizaade because it is genuinely funny. Also, I take up projects only when I am comfortable with the people I am working with, people who have a sense of humour and are open minded.”
When it comes to the adult genre, its existence doesn’t shock Leone. “Why can’t we have an adult genre? What is wrong with it? Why can’t adults have a night out without the kids and see a film or programme made for them? This is an age group who is smart enough to understand the difference between right or wrong, fiction and non-fiction, but unfortunately, we all get caught in different views. The bottomline is, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.”
This year, Leone will also be seen in two serious films, One Night Stand and Baimaan Love. With the industry, that at one time was quite wary of an adult star among them, now waving a ‘shining Sunny’ flag, Leone smiles and says, “I am my biggest competition for this is my life and my journey alone.”

Actress Sunny Leone is happy that superstar Aamir Khan came out in her support following her TV interview and expressed a desire to work with her in near future.
The 34-year-old Indo-Canadian actress, who is an ardent fan of the “PK” star, said Aamir’s tweet about her is a great gesture.
“I can’t express in words how happy I am. It was a very sweet and amazing gesture by him because as actors we all live in a bubble. He took his phone out and expressed his opinion… He supported me and it’s a great feeling,” Sunny told PTI.
In the interview, which has garnered a lot of negative attention on social media and flak from Bollywood celebrities, Sunny, a former adult star, was asked whether Aamir would want to work with her and she had said, “Probably not.”
Sunny faced it sportingly, and it is this spirit which impressed Aamir, who later tweeted that he would be happy to share screen space with her.
“I think anybody in the entire world would like to work with an actor like him. He is someone for whom I have immense respect. Regardless of what happens in the future, I will always be Aamir’s fan. I have always said that I am a fan of Aamir and I always watch his movies,” she said.
The actress was in the capital to promote her upcoming adult comedy “Mastizaade”, in which she is donning a double role.
The “Jism 2” actress feels it’s tough to make people laugh.
“It’s probably one of the toughest jobs because everybody is expecting to laugh when they sit on their seats with their popcorn. There is definitely an expectation, which is already set in people’s minds. Besides me, Vir (Das) and Tusshar (Kapoor), our supporting cast is very funny and those are the people who elevate the lead actors’ performances.”

When asked if she feels that Indians have double standards on sex, Leone said, “I think people are a lot more accepting, a lot more open-minded than we give them credit for, I am a walking proof of that. If people had double standards and were this way, I wouldn’t have been here.”
The actress, whose curvaceous figure is envied by many, urged the women to embrace their bodies.
“Just love your body, who cares what size you are? The whole world knows I have curves, so one just has to embrace it. I have been to places where I see short women, tall women, skinny women, in their bikinis. They are happy, they are proud, they are having a good time. I think you just have to let go.”

Zaveri, who has written adult comedy films like “Masti” and “Grand Masti”, told IANS: “We have started pushing the envelope a little bit more. What really has evolved, is the business of these films. Right from ‘Masti’ to ‘Grand Masti’, it’s been a great graph… it has risen and more people have accepted (such films).”
The director thinks that it is “coming-of-age of adult comedies”.
“For ‘Mastizaade’, the entire industry tweeted the promo and they supported it… which I think is actually the coming-of-age of adult comedies. There are stars, who don’t do these kind of films, but actually are supporting these films,” he added.
Asked if he would like to venture into other genres as well, Zaveri said: “I would love to explore other genres. The next film I’m doing is called ‘Mubarakan’. It’s a comedy, but not an adult comedy. But if you ask me I would love to direct a film like ‘Ek Villain’. Of all the films that I have written, it’s one of the closest to my heart.”

Asked if she’d like to have a deeper connect to her roots by working in a Punjabi film, Sunny told IANS: “Of course! If I had that one Punjabi movie, all my Punjabi (language skills) would come back.”
The actress, who first found visibility as an Indo-Canadian adult film star, made her Bollywood debut in the 2012 film “Jism 2”.
She says she understands the Punjabi language, but has nobody to “practice” with regularly.
“I understand Punjabi, but I don’t have anybody to practice it with on a regular basis. I wish I did. So If I ever get a story that I really like, then yes, of course (I’d love to do a Punjabi film),” she added.
Sunny, who was last seen on the big screen in the 2015 film “Kuch Kuch Locha Hai”, is currently waiting for the release of her forthcoming sex comedy “Mastizaade”. She will be seen playing a double role for the first time.
Directed by Milap Zaveri, the film, which will release on Friday (January 29), also stars actors Vir Das and Tusshar Kapoor.
